Dave (Faxed photo courtesy Dave Rosengard) 7/3/2000 July 2, 2000: The park was empty of tourists, guess they went to OP SAIL. My kids were in Shanghai introducing softball to their Chinese cousins while I stayed in NYC. Hi Sarah, Rachel and Liu Ying. The first game had almost 30 players so it was decided democratically to use the adjacent field and send the rookies over there with a couple of regulars to organize it. I pitched with the rookies and we won 16-10. Rookie Nate Bucchan pitched for the opposition with relief from josh Wager and Bob-they got the loss. It was hot in the overbearing sun, we went 7 innings. With better defense there would have been a lower score. In the nightcap all players moved over to our regular field to play the last game at Hecksher Field for this season. We are moving to Riverside Park 7/8/00. In this nightcap Bobby Naranjo opposed David Rosengard .The final score at the end of 7 was 14-13. Rosengard team led 11-4 going into the top of the 6th.Then Naranjo's team unloaded for 7 runs hitting Rosengard hard. Gerber hit a grand slam down the right field line, Naranjo hit, Schmerler pounded the ball up the middle, Cohen hit , Vernick hit, Tovar hit. After 51/2 it was tied 11 all. In the bottom of the 6th Rookie Nate Bucchan hit a 2 run homer over Kotik's reach in deep center field to go ahead 13-11.Then in the top of the 7thNaranjo's team tied it 13 all. here is how they did it. I pitched to Vinny to lead off the 7th and as I was just to release the ball Naranjo called time-he was umpire. I released the ball and Vinny skied to Wood in left-NO PITCH. Then I pitched to Vinny again and he creamed a pitch right over the center of the plate to Center over Nate's head and cruised into 2nd with a double. Then Palmer drove in Vinny and they got one more to tie it at 13. In the bottom of the 7th Naranjo retired the first two batters Rosengard and Wood with flies to the outfield. Then rookie Bob Metker singled, Josh Wager singled and Chris Hall walked to load the bases for Nate Bucchan who singled to left. Vinny charged the ball, picked it up and fired in one smooth motion to the plate but not in time to nail the runner from 3rd.Game ended 14-13. All agreed it was a great game finale to the first part of the 2000 season. Next we go to Riverside Park for July, August and one week in September. Return to Softball For The Love Of It Page
