A Review of the Movie, "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg"

I missed the game on 7/8/00 because I was in Boston. I saw a great baseball film, "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg."  In this film Hank Greenberg gets grand slam treatment. It is a lovingly researched, sprightly misty-eyed sports documentary steeped in ethnic pride.  It is about the first Jewish slugger who helped the Tigers win many flags and a few World Series.  It shows the awe and joy Jewish fans had for this six foot Gary Cooper-looking goy who hammered the ball over the fences and who had class in face of ethnic anti-Semitism.  In an ethnic subculture that believed brain over brawn, Greenberg is adored by his ethnic fans and he defines masculinity in front of his adoring crowds fusing style and timing and brute force.  As reviewed in the San Francisco Chronicle 2/18/00, where I am quoting much of this View from the Mound, the film vividly weaves in newsreels, sports pages and testimonials from Walter Matthau and Alan Dershowitz.  This film is a HOME RUN.
