Sunday November 19, 2000 Dobbs Ferry Little League Field

Loarte Gives up 1 Run in 7 to win the opener. Schmerler wins a 9 inning slug fest 23-22.

On the chilly Sunday that turned progressively colder as morning turned afternoon 14 Veterans played softball. First game had 7 vs. 7 with many players playing defense at new positions. Fielding exceeded the hitting. Loarte opened the game with a solo homer then Hewes with 2 on his defense came alive turning a double play that should have been a triple play to kill the rally and from there on Hewes pitched an excellent game and so did Loarte. Naranjo also soloed for offense. It was a pitching duel. Both getting velocity on the ball and getting fly balls and ground outs.

In the second game the players unfolded their bats. It was cloudy with a hazy sun, got colder and we lost Schneider in the 3rd inning. Rosengard started for Connor's team and Schmerler started for Hewes' team. In the top of the first Rosengard gave up 8 runs after getting 2 ground ball outs. I felt like I needed to bring in relief for the sake of keeping us in the game. Connor relieved and I went to outfield. Connor gave up 2 runs and got the final out score 10-0 with Connor's team coming to bat .We got 4 and Derek Martinez took over the pitching in the 2nd and completed this 9 inning game. Connor's team came back with 9 runs in the 3rd to make it a game at 13-10. Schmerler pitched 8 complete innings and started the 9th and loaded the bases with no outs and the score 23-18. Loarte came in from left field to finish the game and faced Derek Martinez, the MVP of the game. Derek hit a grand slam now the score was 23-22. Loarte bore down getting 2 outs and having a runner on 2nd with Tony Connor at bat. Tony was 0-2 and Loarte pitched a strike on the outside corner and Tony popped out to Vinny D'Allessio at first to end it.

In the second game the offense on Gils team was 32 hits highlights were: Hewes 6/9;Schmerler 4/8 with BB; Loarte 7/10;Balento 5/7 4 BB; D'Allesio 5/11; Joe Geller 3/11 with a 3 run homer; Josh Geller 2/9 with a homer. The
offense on Connor's team was Ian Liebowitz with 3/6 3BB; Marvin Cohen 4/6; Connor 5/10 Homer; Martinez with 7/9, scored 7 runs and had 6 RBI. Derek was MVP of the game with his offense, defense and pitching.

Everyone played hard and everyone had to do three jobs; Offense, defense and scorebook. Marvin did a yeoman's job calling balls and strikes.

See you next week and remember the weather rule if the high temperature for the day is in the 40's we play even if at game time 10 AM it is not in the 40's.
