APRIL 15, 2001: OPENING DAY IN CENTRAL PARK

HAVELOCK WINS THE FIRST IN 9 7-5; SCHMERLER WINS THE NIGHTCAP IN 7 12-3

On the warm spring day two 20-summer softball veterans of SFTLOI pitched against each other: Rosengard and Hewes in the opener with about 23 other regulars and newcomers.  It felt like summer and people played well.  No homers but there were extra base hits.  Wager brought new bases and string to measure the distances.  Everybody showed up on time and we started the second game before 11 AM.  Highlights: Rosengard's team was down 5-0 after 2 but came back and Havelock pitched out of some jams late in the game and held on for the W.  There were some new players also.

In the nightcap we played 3 innings before we had to move to the next field to finish.  It seems there is a team at 11 at the field.  Schmerler pitched well keeping the batters off balance and Havelock was hit hard.  After 7 with the score 12-3 we ended the game.  Again no homers but a lot of extra base hits.
