SUNDAY OCTOBER 7TH;DOBBS FERRY
APPELL WINS A DOUBLE HEADER
12-5 IN THE OPENER AND 17-12 IN THE AFTERNOON SECOND GAME

In the first game Jeff was going after his 13th W and he pitched a strong
game giving up 5 hits and 5 runs and walking 2 and striking out 2. He had
strong defense only  giving up 1 error and he allowed the 5 hits as follows;
2 singles, 2 doubles and 1 HR. He went 6 innings and faced 24 AB, got out of
jams with pop outs 2 in the 6th to kill a rally. In the 2nd he got all 3
men he faced to ground out 5-3.Honigman played excellent 3rd base. I started
at 1B and in the pre inning warm ups I noticed that Dan was throwing
erratically to first and I rudely suggested he shift to another position and
he rightly put me in my place he proved to me he can play the position well
and I am glad he spoke up for himself; keep it up Dan. In the losing side
Havelock going for17th W gave up 12 runs and 18 hits with 4 HRs 2 SO and 2
BB. In fairness the game was shortened at 6 at Dobbs because of little league
practice so we drove in a convoy of cars to another field in Ardsley but it
was also occupied as well as the other Dobbs field so we returned to Dobbs
at the RR and waited for the little League to finish and we were going to
resume but Havelock and Tony Connor decided to start another game and
Havelock went into town to order Pizza. Highlights in the 1st game were 2HR by
Dave Connor, with 5 RBIs, Lawrence HR, Branca HR. 5 Runs in the 4th included 6
hits including 2 extra base hits by Connor and Rosengard producing 4
RBIs. For the losing team Vinnie hit a 3 Run HR in the 6th. Here is the line;

In the 2nd game we went 9 Innings and it was a hard fought game with 96
AB,29 runs33 Hits 9 home runs 5 Ks, 7 BB, 5 E. Appell struggled for the
first three innings giving up 10 runs in 3 innings. Back to back homers by
Libman a grand slam and D'Allesio made the score 10-2 after 3. The wind was
strong blowing off the Hudson River out towards center and right and the it
was getting colder. But the Pizza arrived and with that the tide turned.
While Appell and his defense held the Home team to 3 runs the rest of the 6
innings the Visitors put up 15 Runs in the next 6 frames. In the 8thvisitors
battered around putting up 8 runs, sending 12 batters to the plate pounding
Havelock with single, double, E-7(2 runs scored), Fly Out, Double, single, single
3 run HR (Connor, A.), single, FC, double, Fly to Left. In the 9th Havelock came
back strong with 2 Ks but allowed 2 more runs. After the game Hewes told me
he was not tired but that he should have changed speeds more. I had a
moment of reflection while standing at 1B between playing observing the
intensity of all the players with a background of windy fall approaching
rapidly with the spirit of our league like a ballard. Appell never giving
in going for his 14th W. Everyone should read the Ballard of the Sad Cafe
written by Carson McCullers in 1943. I read it this summer and loved it and I
see human endeavor some times like a ballard being played out. Certainly our
league has many individuals, many ideals and passions and we always come to
together every week to play softball with great passions. It's life at its
fullest in my view. Here is the line for the 2nd game:

              IP R H HR BB SO---R H E AB
