11/03/02 Game 7 Connor's team wins the series 7-4 in dramatic fashion in the 7th
Hewes won the toss and took Home team .Rosengard was on the mound for the
visitors and hewes on the mound for the Home team . A classic matchup that has
been going on since 1983.This was the final game of the first ever World Seriies
for this league. Everyone was excited and it was a bit warmer at 11:30 AM.The
wind partially sheltered by the trees behind Home and right field line was
blowing out to Center.Visitors had 11 players and the Home team had 10.Here are
the lineups:

Vis scored 1 in the 1st and Home team came back with 2 Vis were shut out 2nd and
3rd, hewes was getting batters to pop up and fly out he was throwing high
stuff.In the 3rd home t eam scored 1 and led 3-1 after 3.In the 4th vis scored 2
to tie it .In the bottom of the 5th with the score tied Cohen poped out to 3B,
and Rowland doubled. gerber lined out to 2B and up came Kotik whowas hot all
series. The manager, Weinberg wanted me to intenionally walk Kotik to face
Balento but I chose to challenge him since Balento had hammered a ball to left
in the first I was worried he would break open the game with 2 men on. I pitched
3 balls outside to kotik and tried to sneak in a strike on the outside corner
but the ball hung up over the plate and he hammered it into the gap in left
center and Rowlands scored. Then I got balento to fly to Center to end it. Hewes
got the visitors in the 5th and 6th with 4 fly outs and 2popups and he looked
strong. In the top of the 7th Hewes got Doughtery and vernick to pop out and and
got ahead of the next batter Carl Weinberg. Weinberg then hit a towering fly
ball to shallow right field on the line and balento and Rowlands tried to get it
and it dropped 5 feet in front of balento and Weinberg was on 2b. Scgneider
followed with a fly ball to right center but it was shallow and N. Rowlands
could not catch it and it dropped in and Weinberg raced home with the tying run.
Then Liebowitz, Appell and Palma singled and after it was all over the visitors
led 7-4.Rosengard pitched a strong 7th and Connor team won the world Series 4
games to 3 in a dramatic finish.

game 2:Schmerler gets shutout 10-0 in 3 1/2 inning contest.

not
have a good outing and was hit hard for 10 runs in 4 innings pitched.
SUNDAY 9/15/02 GAME 1 PITCHING DUEL 8-6 IN 5 INNINGS
In a shortened game at little league field 15 players came and it
was George Loarte vs Rosengard.
In this contest a 3 run homer by Balento in the 4th broke up this close game and
home team won 8-6.Great defense by the home team including 2 double plays Hewes
to josh geller to weinberg in 3rd and 5th innings killed rallies and a great
catch by balento off a smash by D'Allesio that was a sac fly instead of a homer
saved the win for Rosengard.Game also featured 2 homers by Loarte for the
visitors and a grand slam in the first by David Hirsch inthe first. here is the

GAME 2 ARDSLEY FIELD-3 1/2 INNING GAME -10-2
After a 15 min drive we started with 13 players and played 1 inning
and then moved to a near field to finish the game. Again local little league
took the field. The 2nd field was a hardball field so we made bases and finished
this lopsided game with Hewes vs Schmerler. Havelock did have it and was hit
hard for 10 hits in 4 innings. Scheider hit for the cycle.Schmerler's visitors
had this for a team:Schmerler Pitching,Schneider 3b,Josh geller 2b,Rosengard

hitters. The Home team had Hewes Pitching,Cohen 1b,Joe geller 2b,David hirsch

GAME 2;Correction;Gil Schmerler's hit that won the game
was anoutfield
hit over a drawn in left fielder Chris hall. It came when Gil was 0-4 on
day and it make his day getting the clutch hit. Also Savelle and Geller
were not running on the hit because they were waiting to see if Hall
would catch it and Geller scored by a step because he was holding up
at 2nd base to see if it would be caught.Geller had been 0-3 onthe day
before his clutch hit .

In this opener Appell's Home team came from behind to
beat Rosengard's visitors 8-7.Visitors were leading 5-0 midway.
Scattered hits in 3 innings made up the offence.Home tied it at 5 in the 4th .A

error.Sue Kostner going back and to her left caught the ball and in motion
trying to throw to first to try to double up the runner
the ball dropped and was ruled error because " not having possession ,"
Weinberg at first raced towards
2nd picking up the ball and throwing wildly to force the runner, ball goes to
center field.Weinberg said he had mud in
his eyes as he threw. That set the stage for 5 runs and another force at third

inning. The visitors lost the game in that inning.Visitors went on to break the
tie and lead 7-5 going into the bottom

Hewes pitches a one hitter 16-0 in the 2nd game Hewes pitched against Schmerler and allowedjust 1 hit through 6 innings. the game ended in the 6th as the 11 oclock hour came and went.Hewes team played errorless ball Havelock was able to keep the batters off balance with changing speeds and pitching inside and outside. Schmerler left after 3 and Les Taub came in in relief. The score was 6-0 and in the bottom of the 4th Hewes's home team scored 10 runs highlighted by a grand slam by Appell. notes: we had 20 players, one collision of outfielders-PJ Gannon and Fred lang in right but no injuries. there were some words about the selection of teams early in the day and then it quieted down and at the end of the day some players were again dishearted about team selection. The weather was good and the sun did bother some outfielders who did not have sunglasses. In the first game Hewes cheered his team on and in the field did some daring baserunning to tie the game at 6-6. so the guy that participated in team selection urged the best from his teammates and maybe that made the difference. After the first inning it looked like Connor's team would dominate after scoring 4 in the first but it was not the case.

GIL SCHMERLER IS KNOCKED RIGHT OUT OF A SOFTBALL GAME BY KOTIK'S LINE DRIVE
In the opener Gil Schmerler was having another winning game when he was hit by a 130 miles an hour smash to his face by Phil kotik in the top of the 4th. Herb Score. Mention his name even to a marginal baseball fan and you'll hear,"Oh, yeah, he was the guy who was hit in the eye by McDougald's line drive.Shame.great promise.Knocked him right out of baseball."Did it? How does an arm go bad? When a spur begins to grow? When strain distorts a tendon? When the chill of a spring night game subtly alters musculature? When a baseball traveling 130 miles per hour smashes in to an eye/Why does a pitcher suddenly lose his arm?Schmerler (2-2) left the mound crumpled but stayed in to DH and Hewes went in getting out the side and then Schmerler's team rallied for 8 runs in the 5th to go ahead 9-2. Rosengard pitching with pain that day kept goose eggs the rest of the way and he team rallied but the game was called at the end of the 7th so we could play 2 games with the result 9-6 with Schmerler getting a no decision and Hewes picking up the win pitching 4 innings. For thosesmarginal and avid baseball fans Herb Score was a fastball leftly who was drafted out of high school after pitching 6 no hitters and 3 perfect games in 3 years of high school.10 of the 16 major league teams offered bonuses up to $80,000 if he would sign and 4 team simply said"tell us your best offer and we'll top it." Young skinny Herb Score seemed destined.Three fastastic years in successionone in the highest rung of the minors and 2 in the Majors. He wins 36 and loses 19 in thoses years with the Indians. He strikes out 245 in the first year and 263 in the 2nd year-records.Feller did not strike out 240 till he 3rd year.Groove who may he called the best left hander not till his 6th year.Score was rookie of the year in the Minors and Rookie of the year with Cleveland the next year. Then he is through. He came back in 1958 after a year out after being hit in the eye (May 7,1957) he came back but in anight game against the Washington Senators in the Spring,1958,cold and damp he felt a strain the forearm just below the elbow and the ball hardly reached the plate. In 1959 he came back and Cleveland let him go after the all star break and he went to play for the White Sax with AlLopez his old manager with Cleveland and he played util 1963.he had the courage to try to come back; After he left Chicago in 1963 Cleveland hired him next year as their announcer so he could stay in baseball. Central Park: Appell wins easily 18-6 in a tree highlighted game A tree incident highlighted the 5th for the visitors as Balento wiped out a whole family of birds and I hope Bobby Naranjo in Canada reads about this because it is reminiscent of the Dave Winfield incident in the Toronto Skydome back in the 80's in Winfield's first year with New York. As you remember he hit a gull and all of Canada was up in arms. In this US Softball game Joe Balento hit a 3-0 pitched and lifted it high into right field straight into the big Oak tree as Glen Lawrence waited for the ball to drop and Sue Kostner and Joe Balento circled the bases, Hewes flew off the mound and ran towards right field encouraging all his fielders to run out to right field to catch the ball by now seated firmly in a nest of dead baby birds or eggs awaiting hatching. After what seems an eternity play resumed with a ruling of ground rule double for Joe and Sue returned to 3rd. The team at bat proceeded to score 6 runs featuring a clean grand slam by Kevin Mack to go ahead 18-6. The winning visitors had strong pitching from Appell who had good control mixing up his speeds working the corners and great offense which featured 2 homers, Martinez (3 run) and Mack (4 run). I came in for mop up pitching a perfect 1 2/3. Here is the line:

Game 2 Rosengard wins for Visitors 9-4 in 8 The teams remained the same with 3 players traded on each. Teams reversed home visitor. The key inning for the win was holding off a rally and walking Derek Martinez to load the bases with a 4-4 tie with 2 out in the bottom of the 5th. it paid off and the inning ended a tie. We went on to get insurance runs in the 6th-8th and I was able to hold them with the great help of great defense all around throughout the game. Schmerler and I pitched pretty evenly and it was great game. Here is the line:

After the game 7 of us went the cafe to discuss the game and this column. It was great to get guidance this week. Ian felt it was a beautiful day, Sue felt the ground crew did a great job and we did move home plate back due to the mud. Gil went 5/7 and wants the readers to WATCH OUT. Hewes felt Gil pitched well pitching the corners and Gil felt there was excellent pitching on both sides. Some of us had foot long hot dogs and tea and coffee. Ian said he wanted to win it for me and that was nice to hear. I asked Ian about a quote Samuel Johnson made a day before he died to his doctor. "canst thou not minister to a mind diseas'd pluck from the memory rooted sorrow; raze at the written troubles of the brain; and, with some sweet oblivious antidote, cleanse the stuff'd bosom of that perilous stuff which weighs upon the heart?
The doctor replied, "therein the patient must minister to himself."
Does anyone know in what play by Shakespeare these lines appear? Next column I will give you the answer

MAY 5TH 2002; HEWES SWEEPS A DOUBLEHEADER 10-2 AND 5-4 Havelock Hewes a 20 year veteran of SFTLOI came back from Hernia Surgery repair and with pain pitched two 7 inning games and won both of them. In the first game he had a shut out through six innings and cruising along with a 10-0 lead. He had walked 5 and struck out 1 and gave up a double and single. In the 7th the home team lead off with a solo homer by Judd Pilesoff and put together two more hits to get a 2nd run and it ended up 10-2 with Hewes pitching a 5 hitter. In the second game hewes with helped by 7 errors by the Home team to get the W. Home team came back with 3 to close to 5-4 in the 5th and both teams were scoreless in the 6th and then in the 7th Hewes after giving up a lead off walk to Cohen bore down and used a little more velocity and got Vernick who had earlier homered to line to right and Leibowitz to pop to Hewes and Kotik to strike out swinging to end a thrilling 2nd game. HIGHLIGHTS: IN GAME # 1 Dan Schneider had 2 RBIs, Brill, Liebman, Nesin, and Gerber each had 2 hits
IN THE GAME # 2 Dan Schneider, Paul Brill, Phil Kotik, and O'Donnell produced the home team runs in the 5th .
THERE WAS ALSO SOME GREAT DEFENSE IN BOTH GAMES WITH LINE OUTS TO INFIELDERS AND SOME GREAT CATCHES IN THE OUTFIELD. THE SUN WAS VERY GLARING AND QUITE A CHALLENGE FOR THE FIELDERS. LEFT FIELD IS HARD BECAUSE OF THE OTHER TEAM PLAYING NEXT TO US AND RIGHT FIELD IS HARD BECAUSE OF THE TREES.

April 14, 2002 -- Opening Day
HAVELOCK WINS THE OPENER IN 9
On a warm Spring day when the weather people were wrong 28 showed up for the
first game at 8:30 AM. People arrived at 8AM and Batting and fielding practice
lasted for 30 minutes with 5 swings a batter. Hewes and Connor made up the teams
and the game started at 8:30 .The game was tied 3-3 till the 8th inning. Good
pitching and good defense kept it close. Hewes's team took the lead in the 8th
and held out to win. Mainly regulars played with some new players. Havelock is
keeping the stats and has the score book and at the time of this writing I have
not received the score sheet so I have no highlights to put in this column.
2ND GAME SUSPENDED AT THE END OF 5 1/2 WITH APPELL'S TEAM AHEAD.
In the 2nd game which started with about 22 players during the 10 o'clock
hour teams stayed the same, pitchers in the first game switched teams and Joe
Sopiak pitched for his team and Appell again pitched. Both pitchers bore down
and kept it close again. At 11:10 the game was called due the permits. The next
league arrived and they had a permit for 10:30 AM, with them waiting and milling
around for over 30 minutes Hewes and Connor called the game. Next week we start
the game at 8;30 and BP at 8AM and we play on field closest to the Carousel.

And, we have dueling "tag-team" reports on the
November 19 contest from Dave Rosengard and Ian
Lebowitz -- a day highlighted by Ian's joining Bill Weinberg (who did it
during the early days of the Eisenhower Administration) as the only two mammals
ever to hit the scoreboard during a game on the Dobbs Ferry field, for which I
owe them both a meal at a reasonably-priced local eatery of their choice
(defined as a location with clean trays) sometime before the Presidential
election is finally resolved or a majority of dot-coms show a profit, whichever
is later.
